Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the club located? How do I get there?

We currently meet here.

When is practice?

Practice currently is Wednesday nights from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

I'm a beginner, how do I sign up?

Come to your first practice, and we will get you all the information you need.

It's my first day. What do I bring?

Come wearing comfortable, loose fitting clothes. All other equipment can be purchased through the club.

How much does Kendo cost?

Monthly dues are currently set at a low $20 per month.

Other common costs for beginners are about $30 for a wooden training sword (bokken), about $25 for a bamboo sword used for striking (shinai), about $80 for a the uniform (keikogi and hakama), and yearly regional and federation dues. Children's are less than adults. About $100 annually. Not all of these costs are due up front, most will come up throughout the quarter or year. As a beginner you won't need to worry about purchasing all of the equipment right away. As you are approved to wear the uniform and armor/protective gear you will be notified when you should start considering purchasing which pieces of equipment.

More advanced practitioners will need to purchase protective gear or armor which can start at $300 for a beginners set, and go up. Although like football pads they do cost a far amount, they will last for many years if they are taken care of.

Does it hurt?

Not really, occasionally a missed strike will sting. The most common injuries are bruises from strikes that miss their targets. Despite being a full-contact martial art, kendo is very safe to practice. It has a minimal injury rate and well below common activities such as baseball, soccer, basketball.
